Auto Insurance
A Bargersville checklist for comparing an auto loan or lease balance with insurance settlement and gap options.
Start with three different numbers
A new or recently financed car can lose value faster than the loan balance falls. Write down the current payoff amount from your lender, the vehicle’s approximate market value, and your comprehensive and collision deductibles. These figures are different, and each can change over time. Do not assume the purchase price or the amount on your loan statement is what an insurer would pay after a total loss.
Ask what happens after a total loss
If a covered theft or crash results in a total loss, the policy’s valuation method, deductible, limits, and claim facts determine the settlement. The lender may still be owed more than that settlement. Ask your lender for a current payoff quote and ask your licensed agent how your auto policy handles total losses. Keep the loan contract, insurance declarations, and any add-on agreement together so you can compare the actual terms.
Read any gap agreement carefully
Guaranteed asset protection, often called gap, may be offered through a lender, dealer, or insurer. Its availability, cost, cancellation rights, maximum benefit, exclusions, and treatment of the deductible vary by contract. Ask whether it covers late fees, past-due payments, or rolled-over debt; do not assume it does. If you lease, review the lease’s own loss provisions before buying overlapping protection. Request the exact written terms, rather than relying on a sales summary.
Set a reminder to review the balance
As the loan declines, the potential difference may narrow. Recheck the payoff and the agreement at renewal, after a large principal payment, or when you refinance or trade the car. Ask how to cancel an unnecessary add-on and whether a refund is available under the contract. Our auto policy update checklist covers other details to review when driving habits change.
