Using Your Car for Delivery Work? Check Your Auto Coverage First

Vehicle on a road for an auto insurance discussion

Before using a personal car for paid deliveries in Johnson County, document how you drive and ask which policy applies at each stage.

A few evening deliveries can look like a small change to a normal commute. From Bargersville to Greenwood or Franklin, however, the purpose of a trip can matter to an auto insurance review. If you use your own vehicle to deliver meals, groceries, packages, or products for a side business, discuss that use with your insurer before the first paid trip.

Describe the work, not just the mileage

Write down what you deliver, who pays you, whether you use an app or work directly for a business, and how often you drive. Note whether anyone else drives the car, whether products are stored in it, and whether the work may expand. A drive to your regular job and a trip carrying a customer’s order are different facts for an agent to evaluate.

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners explains that personal and commercial vehicle use are treated differently and that personal auto policies typically exclude some business use. That is a reason to ask about your own contract, not a conclusion that a particular trip is covered or excluded.

Map the stages of a delivery trip

Ask which coverage may apply while you are available for an order, after accepting one, while carrying it, and on the drive home. If a platform or employer describes its insurance, request the actual coverage terms and ask how they coordinate with your own policy. Do not assume an app’s coverage replaces your policy or applies at every moment.

  • Does my current policy permit this specific delivery activity?
  • Would I need a different policy or an available endorsement?
  • What liability and vehicle-damage coverage applies at each stage?
  • Are deductibles, limits, or driver requirements different?
  • How should I document the vehicle’s business use and report a claim?

Put the answer in your records

Keep the written policy documents and any confirmed changes with your vehicle records. If the schedule, platform, vehicle, or kind of delivery changes, ask again. The goal is to know the terms before a stressful claim, rather than trying to reconstruct your work pattern afterward.
