Life Insurance
An Indiana checklist for comparing a proposed life policy with current coverage before making a change.
Start with the policy already in force
If a new life insurance proposal looks attractive, first list what the current policy provides. Record its insurer, policy number, owner, insured person, beneficiaries, death benefit, premium, payment schedule, and any term end date. For permanent coverage, ask for current values and any surrender charges from the insurer. Keep the actual documents nearby instead of comparing advertisements or an old quote.
Compare like with like
A lower initial premium may reflect a different benefit, duration, policy type, guarantee, or future cost. Ask a licensed agent to explain both policies side by side, including riders, exclusions, conversion rights, and how premiums can change. Our term life end-date guide addresses one timing issue that can be easy to miss.
Understand the application and timing
A new policy may require underwriting, updated health information, and insurer approval. A submitted application or paid first premium alone does not prove the replacement is in force. Ask the new insurer or agent for the effective date and any conditions before taking action on existing coverage. Avoid a gap in protection while a Johnson County household is waiting for a decision.
Ask about costs and rights
Changing policies can create new fees or surrender costs and may reset certain periods or terms. If a policy has cash value, a withdrawal or surrender may have tax consequences. Ask qualified tax and legal advisors about those issues; do not assume a replacement is financially better because one number improved. Record what happens to any existing loan or automatic premium arrangement.
Make a documented decision
Keep the comparison, written explanations, application outcome, and beneficiary details together. Ask the agent how to handle any cancellation only after the new coverage and its effective date are confirmed. Review beneficiaries separately using our beneficiary checklist.
