Start with safety at the roadside

A disabled vehicle on a Johnson County road creates an immediate safety problem before it becomes an insurance question. Pull to a safe place if possible, turn on hazard lights, and follow emergency dispatch or police instructions when traffic or injuries are involved. Do not stand between vehicles or attempt a repair in an unsafe lane. Record your location, the vehicle condition, and the time you requested help. If the vehicle cannot be driven, keep the tow operator name, destination, mileage, and itemized receipt.

Read the service terms before choosing a tow

Roadside assistance may be an optional auto-policy feature, a vehicle-warranty benefit, or a separate motor-club membership. Check your declarations and service agreement to see which vehicle and drivers qualify, how to request a provider, and whether the benefit covers towing, a jump start, a tire change, fuel delivery, or lockout help. Ask about mileage or dollar caps, service-call limits, and whether a second tow is covered. A towing benefit generally does not mean the mechanical repair itself is insured. Coverage and provider availability depend on the actual contract.

Know when a claim is a separate question

A flat battery or mechanical failure differs from damage caused by a crash, theft, fire, or another event. If there is physical damage, ask the insurer whether an auto claim should be opened and which coverage, deductible, and reporting steps apply. A service dispatch may be handled separately from a damage claim. Before authorizing storage or a long-distance tow, ask who pays if the chosen shop is outside a covered distance. Keep photographs, repair diagnostics, and every invoice so the cause and charges can be reviewed.

Build a small breakdown plan

Save the correct roadside number and policy details where household drivers can find them. List a preferred repair shop, an emergency contact, and a safe way home. Compare any roadside feature with other memberships so you understand overlap without assuming two programs will reimburse the same expense. For a crash involving another driver, see our crash documentation checklist. Browse more Auto Insurance articles and ask a licensed agent to explain your particular service terms.
