Home Insurance
A practical room-by-room system for recording belongings, updating the list, and asking better homeowners insurance questions.
Could you list what is in your home without walking through it? Most of us would miss ordinary items, especially after a move, a renovation, or years of gradual purchases. A home inventory gives Bargersville and Center Grove homeowners a clearer record before a loss and a better starting point for a personal property coverage conversation.
Start with one room in 20 minutes
Choose a room you use every day. Take a slow video or a few wide photos, then list the larger items and anything that would be difficult to replace. Open closets and drawers. Add brands, model or serial numbers, purchase dates, and receipts where you have them. An approximate entry today is more useful than waiting for a perfect spreadsheet you never finish.
The NAIC home inventory guidance recommends organizing belongings by room or category and using photos as part of the record. The record can help you describe property to an insurer if you need to file a claim; it does not itself change policy limits or guarantee reimbursement.
Move through the house systematically
After the first room, set a short appointment for the next one. Include a garage, shed, or workshop where relevant. Note belongings that are easy to overlook: tools, sporting gear, small appliances, and seasonal items. If you have jewelry, collections, or other high-value property, ask your agent whether the policy has special limits or whether additional coverage options are available.
- Where is my personal property limit shown?
- How does this policy value damaged or stolen belongings?
- Do certain categories have separate limits or documentation requirements?
- Would items kept away from home be treated differently?
- What records would help if I had to make a claim?
Store and refresh the record
Keep a secure copy somewhere you can access even if the house is damaged. Protect account numbers and other sensitive data. Add major purchases when they happen and refresh the photos periodically. The NAIC also advises reviewing an inventory annually and saving receipts for repairs and new items.
