Shared Debts? Make a Life Insurance Obligations Worksheet

Household planning materials representing a life insurance obligations worksheet

Life Insurance

A Johnson County worksheet for discussing shared debts and life insurance needs with a licensed agent.

List obligations without guessing who owes them

Start with the current balance, monthly payment, term, and account contact for each mortgage, vehicle loan, private loan, or other significant obligation. Mark whether you are a borrower, co-borrower, guarantor, or only an authorized user. The legal responsibility after a death depends on the agreement and applicable law; ask a qualified advisor about questions you cannot resolve from the documents.

Map the household cash flow

A surviving household may need money for housing, transportation, care, and everyday bills while it adjusts. Put essential monthly expenses beside available savings and other expected income. Separate debts that would continue from costs that might change. This is a planning worksheet, not a formula for a required life insurance amount.

Compare the coverage you actually have

Record each life policy owner, insured person, beneficiary, coverage amount, and whether the term has an end date. Include employer coverage but ask what happens if the job changes. Our job-change review covers that separate question. A larger loan balance does not automatically mean an existing policy changes or that new coverage is available.

Protect access to the records

Keep the worksheet, lender contacts, and policy details in a place a trusted person can find. Do not put account passwords in a shared article or an unsecured folder. Our policy claims folder guide explains how to organize useful contacts without turning this worksheet into a claim instruction.

Use the worksheet in a review

Bring the figures and current policy documents to a licensed agent. Ask how different coverage amounts, durations, and premiums fit the household budget and what underwriting would require. Revisit the worksheet when a shared obligation is added, paid off, or refinanced. Browse more Life Insurance articles for planning prompts.

This article provides general educational information, not individualized insurance, legal, or tax advice. Coverage, availability, limits, exclusions, and claims depend on the policy and insurer. Review your documents with a licensed agent and consult other qualified advisors as needed.
