Find out which lines are yours

Water, sewer, electric, and other underground lines may cross a yard before reaching a Bargersville home. The utility and homeowner may each be responsible for different sections. Ask the provider where its responsibility ends, and check your closing documents or local utility information. Do not guess based only on where a line lies or where a meter is installed.

Separate line repairs from damage inside the home

A broken underground line can involve excavation, pipe repair, landscaping, and possibly water damage indoors. These are different costs with potentially different coverage terms. Standard homeowners coverage may not pay to repair a worn or failed service line; an endorsement or separate program may be available. Water backup and flood also have their own definitions and exclusions. Our water backup worksheet explains questions for a separate indoor exposure.

Review limits, causes, and restoration

Ask a licensed agent which owned lines and causes of loss are eligible, whether age or wear matters, and how the deductible and limit apply. Ask whether excavation, street or sidewalk work, and replacement of disturbed landscaping are included. Compare any utility-offered repair plan with insurance coverage; the provider, exclusions, and claims process may differ. Get the actual agreement before deciding.

Keep a useful property record

Save the utility contact numbers, survey or line diagrams if available, prior repair invoices, and photos of the affected area. Before digging, use Indiana’s required utility locating process and a qualified contractor. If a problem develops, protect people and property first, then document the damage and call the relevant utility or professional.
