Leaving a Job? Check Your Group Life Insurance Options

Life insurance and employee benefit documents reviewed during a job change

Life Insurance

An Indiana job-change checklist for reviewing employer life benefits, conversion or portability deadlines, and coverage gaps.

Confirm what coverage you actually have

A group life benefit at work may include an employer-paid amount, optional employee-paid coverage, and separate spouse or dependent coverage. Request the current benefits statement and certificate. Note the insured people, benefit amounts, beneficiary designations, and when coverage ends after employment or eligibility changes. Do not rely on a payroll deduction alone to confirm that coverage is in force.

Ask about conversion and portability deadlines

Some group plans offer a right to convert to an individual policy or port certain coverage after a qualifying job change. Options, eligible amounts, premiums, evidence-of-insurability rules, and deadlines vary by plan and insurer. Ask the employer’s benefits office and carrier for written forms and the exact due dates before the transition. Missing a deadline can remove an option, so record whom you contacted and when.

Compare the next job’s coverage and household needs

A new employer may impose a waiting period or provide different benefit amounts. Map the end date of the old plan, the start date of the new plan, and any individual policies already owned. Compare household income needs, debts, childcare, and final expenses without assuming that a new policy will be issued or immediately effective. Do not cancel an in-force policy until replacement coverage is confirmed and the consequences are understood.

Keep a transition file

Save the old certificate, conversion or portability notices, application copies, payment confirmations, and new-plan effective-date letter. Our policy replacement checklist covers related tradeoffs.
